WHEN it was announced last year that the former creative director of Dior Homme, Hedi Slimane, would replace Stefano Pilati at the helm of the YSL brand, everyone was eager to see what the Frenchman would do. Cue one rebrand and one hell of an Autumn/Winter ready to wear collection.

Fishnets, black eyeliner and the ‘bedhead look’ took centre stage at Slimane’s first A/W show under the Saint Laurent name. From patterned mohair cardigans to biker jackets and boyfriend blazers, no one did grunge as well as this French fashion house. And we mean no one.

Grunge may have appeared on the catwalk before (Marc Jacobs for Perry Ellis 1992, Felder Felder 2008), but Slimine’s vision made grunge likable again, and not just for the emo elite. Don’t believe me? Then take a look for yourselves:

black fishnet tights /essie ankle boots

Fishnet, studded boots, mesh and tartan. All scream grunge and the whole outfit only costs £75.98! If you deconstruct this look, each item is not only a wardrobe staple for the next season, but they are all perfect Summer/Autumn transitional pieces too! Pair the tartan shirt with some Topshop denim shorts and cowboy boots for the current western look, and team neon accessories with the sheer maxi dress for Ibizan chic!

Are you gonna go grunge this Autumn?

matte

IT’S all about the lips this season with bold matte shades, as seen on the runways of Giles and Burberry Prorsum.

Topshop, Rimmel and YSL have all released vibrant shades with ‘long lasting power’ and more importantly no shine or shimmer – perfect for girls on the go!

Just keep the rest of your make-up minimal by adding a touch of mascara and concealer, and voila, you’re set for the day!

What are your favourite matte lipsticks?

This week I have created three outfits from online savvy-store, ASOS. ASOS is the UK’S largest online-only fashion store and has been around for over 10 years, providing budding fashionistas with the latest trends priced from £5 to over £100.

These three looks are just snippets of what designers have predicted for the Autumn/Winter 2011 season. Think futuristic silhouettes, eccentric ladylike pieces and fabric clashes, just to name a few.  Enjoy.

Here they are from clock-wise round:

Outfit 1
ASOS Wiggle Mesh Body
, £30 – The number one Autumn/Winter 2011 trend which has graced the catwalks of Dolce & Gabbana, Felder Felder and Alexander McQueen is the fetish trend. I know what you’re thinking, ‘fetish??’ Yes, fetish. Despite the initial thought to fetish, the catwalks saw a more ‘demure’ fetish – so I’m not promoting handcuffs and whips before you ask! This body is oh-so-perfect for the ‘fetish’ look, and resembles this top by designer, Giles.  This is perfect for those who want to incorporate this trend into their wardrobe without needing to go over-the-top like sexy celebs; Rihanna and Britney Spears.

ASOS Premium Short with Leather Pockets, £50 – These lovely red shorts are perfect for achieving the ‘fetish’ look for Autumn/Winter 2011. The leather pockets add a sense of modesty to the trend with an added touch of contrasting colour-blocking with the dark red and black colour palette. These shorts are also a better substitution and are a more original choice than wearing black leather shorts, which with this look, are expected.

ASOS Style Vintage-Style Filigree Articulated Armour Ring, £10 – By adding a vintage gold armour ring to this outfit, it makes the outfit less ‘sexed-up’ and more modest-looking. I love gold rings, and I could not let this pretty vintage piece slip my eyes.

ASOS Passion Peep-Toe Court Shoe, £25 – With such a strong colour palette, adding any more colours to the mix would not mesh well. So these nude peep-toe shoes are perfect for not only elongating your legs (an excellent choice for shorties like me!) but it keeps any attention to the upper-half of the outfit which is where the trend is most frequent. This look goes to show you don’t need to wear hardly any clothes to feel ‘sexy’!

Outfit 2
Motel Ozlem Colour Block Dress
, £38 – Colour-blocking is still a big part of the Autumn/Winter 2011 season with designers such as Gucci, Haider Ackermann and Louis Vuitton having their own take on the trend. This colour block dress achieves this trend perfectly without going over-the-top – think a brighter version of this Prada dress at Milan Fashion week, without the clashing print.

ASOS Leather Cropped Blazer, £100 – A cropped leather blazer ‘toughens’ up this party look and clashes with this dress perfectly. At £100, it is definitely an investment piece which can be used for a whole load of different looks from toughening up pretty floral dresses, to achieving this season’s ‘fetish’ look. It is safe to say that this is most definitely money well spent.

Illamasqua Lipstick in Climax, £15.50 – Forget Mary Katranzou pastel pink lips and statement DSquared2 red lips, it’s all about 90s grunge/ 1970s-inspired lip shades! Not convinced? This beauty trend was at the forefront of Autumn/Winter 2011 fashion shows with Marc Jacobs and YSL leading the shade down the catwalk of Milan, for example. This lipstick will complement the leather blazer perfectly.

ASOS Weave Metal Tip Envelope Clutch, £30 – Woven accessories are a huge Spring/Summer 2011 trend at the moment with high-street stores such as Topshop, incorporating this material into their bags and hats. So I had to include this current trend into outfit two! This woven envelope clutch clashes with the leather blazer and colour block dress with ease, making the outfit more unique and original than if I had accessorized the dress differently.

ASOS Swatch Lace-up Block Heel  Shoe, £45 – This lace-up block heel shoe makes me think of Alexa Chung, a style icon who totally rocks the indie/vintage look! If you want to make like Alexa, then this shoe is definitely for you. Not only can it complete and complement this outfit effortlessly, these shoes can be dressed up with this dress, but can be dressed down with skinny jeans for the casual day look.

Outfit 3
ASOS Crop Trouser in Metallic Finish, £40 – Fashion forecasters have predicted the future – literally! The ‘futuristic’ look is another big trend which has hit the Autumn/Winter 2011 catwalks with a metallic palette of clothing from Calvin Klein to strong silhouette pieces as seen on Viktor & Rolf and Balmain models. So these silver metallic crop trousers had to be included in the third and final outfit in this week’s wishlist! The key to this look is simplistic pieces and strong colours which will balance each other rather than having loads of clashing prints.

ASOS Blue Cropped Jumper, £30 – A blue cropped jumper will look great with the silver trousers and shows that you don’t have to dress up too much with this futuristic trend, and that you can be casual too!

ASOS Statement Metal and Multi-Coloured Feather Necklace, £25 – A metal and multi-coloured necklace will add more subtle colour to this third outfit, again, without going ‘over-the-top’. Feathers are still on trend for the Spring/Summer 2011 season, so it would be rude not to include them into this look.  This statement necklace is the only necessary accessory you need to complete this outfit, adding any more accessories would just kill the look.

Barry M Lip Paint in Dolly Pink, £4.50 – This pretty pastel pink shade will contrast the blue jumper flawlessly, leaving your lips to in-fact, do the talking. With make-up such as this making an impact on this outfit, who needs loads of accessories?

ASOS Defend Canvas & Suede High Top Trainers, £30 – Whoever thought high top trainers were too ‘casual’ were wrong. These trainers are the finishing touch to this third look, which not only allows you to achieve the comfortable casual look, but you will look fashionable and on-trend at the same time.

That is another wishlist done for this week. Next week I will be scouring the Miss Selfridge website to create three on-trend looks. I bet your shaking with excitement
