TRAVEL – what to pack for a two month USA adventure

travel - whats in my suitcase

Tomorrow I fly to New York to start my trekamerica adventure!

It’s come around so quickly! As a helpful guide for future trekkers, or for anyone travelling to the USA in general, I thought it would be a great to show you guys what’s in my suitcase, and what I’ve packed for a two month trip!

hand luggagetravel - whats in my suitcase - hand luggage
new look backpack/cross-body / glamour magazine / New York guide / mini hairbrush & comb / samsung camera / watch / passport

linebreak

It may be small but this New Look bag is very versatile. With a handy strap, the bag can either be a backpack (perfect for days when we’re hiking) or a cross-body bag (great for when we’re in the city). The tassel also adds a cute touch. My in-flight essentials include my samsung camera (I have to say it’s not very good, but it does an okay job at taking photos if my iphone ever runs out of battery) and my New York guide, which was given to me as a leaving present from the guys at F&F. With fold out maps and information on the main attractions, places to eat and entertainment, I can’t wait to use it!

the essentialstravel - whats in my suitcase - essentials

snow & rock XL trek towel / trespass packaway waterproof jacket / torch

linebreak

A small torch is a must for walking around the campsites at night (and more importantly for not getting lost whilst searching for the toilet). I bought a handy packaway Trespass jacket from Argos which is waterproof and has a hidden hood. This will be a great lightweight layer for when it rains, and for our visit to Niagara Falls. I left it quite late to get a towel for the trip, so for £17.99 I bought this XL one from Snow & Rock. It is really thin, but apparently it dries 10x quicker than a normal towel, so we will have to wait for the verdict on that one! It is however really compact and that means more room in the suitcase for clothes!

toiletries galoretravel - whats in my suitcase - toiletries

t-zone face wash / razor / toothbrush / mini toothpaste / carex body wipes / paracetamol / plasters / face cloth / mini batiste dry shampoo / insect repellent / full size radox shower gel / full size garnier shampoo & conditioner / full size sure deodrant / nivea 50+ sun spray / nivea moisturiser / mini gilette shaving foam / mini body shop hand wash

linebreak

I’ll be taking these in a large see-through bag, alongside my very little amount of make-up. Some important essentials to shout about here are insect repellent with 50% DEET (apparently there are mosquitos and ticks in America), sun cream (factor 50, gotta protect your skin), carex body wipes (there are apparently no showers at Yosemite, groovy) and the of course plenty of plasters and paracetamol (for those nights out and long walks!)

tops and teestravel - whats in my suitcase - tops

vila sequin top / river island nyc tee / next embellished vest / asos grid vest / river island sequin vest / primark lace kimono

linebreak

I’ve packed more tops than shown above (about 15 in total), but here are a few of my favourites. As you can see I love all things black, white and er, embellished! The sequin tops are perfect for nights out, the kimono is a great cover-up and I couldn’t resist visiting New York without my River Island NYC tee (yeah, I’ll be that tourist).

short storytravel - whats in my suitcase - shorts

river island denim shorts / primark linen shorts

linebreak

Once upon a time, there lived a girl called Sarah, who loved her shorts as much as she loved black, white and all things embellished. Shorts are my wardrobe staple, and as the weather looks to be getting rather hot in America, I thought it would be best to pack a variety of linen and denim shorts. Great for the day and the evening!

shoes shoes shoestravel - whats in my suitcase - shoes

f&f flip flops / gelert walking boots / converse / primark flatform sandals

linebreak

I’ll be taking four pairs of shoes on this trip – these must-have flip flops (for showers, trust me you do need them), walking boots for hikes and long walks (extra points if they’re waterproof), converse for everyday wear and flatform sandals for nights out (and the extra height).

home comfortstravel - whats in my suitcase - home comforts

topman mtv jumper / topdeck hoodie / primark leggings / primark blanket scarf

linebreak

What’s a trip without some home comforts? Clothes-wise it’s these above. Jumpers can take up a large amount of room in your suitcase, so I thought I’d pack one jumper and one hoodie. Two pairs of basic leggings are great for the cold weather too, as well as a blanket scarf (which will be pretty handy for the 8 hour flight.)

Other nifty things to pack are: underwear (including cosy socks for those extra cold nights), face wipes, swimwear, jeans (I’m taking one pair), make-up (eye liner, lipstick, lip balm and mascara) and a sleeping bag if you’re camping.

So there you have it – my packing guide for America. If you want to stay tuned into my American adventure, follow me on instagram – @sazwatson.

WHEN it was announced last year that the former creative director of Dior Homme, Hedi Slimane, would replace Stefano Pilati at the helm of the YSL brand, everyone was eager to see what the Frenchman would do. Cue one rebrand and one hell of an Autumn/Winter ready to wear collection.

Fishnets, black eyeliner and the ‘bedhead look’ took centre stage at Slimane’s first A/W show under the Saint Laurent name. From patterned mohair cardigans to biker jackets and boyfriend blazers, no one did grunge as well as this French fashion house. And we mean no one.

ysl2

Grunge may have appeared on the catwalk before (Marc Jacobs for Perry Ellis 1992, Felder Felder 2008), but Slimine’s vision made grunge likable again, and not just for the emo elite. Don’t believe me? Then take a look for yourselves:

cream pearl necklace / red tartan shirt / sheer maxi dress
black fishnet tights /essie ankle boots

Fishnet, studded boots, mesh and tartan. All scream grunge and the whole outfit only costs £75.98! If you deconstruct this look, each item is not only a wardrobe staple for the next season, but they are all perfect Summer/Autumn transitional pieces too! Pair the tartan shirt with some Topshop denim shorts and cowboy boots for the current western look, and team neon accessories with the sheer maxi dress for Ibizan chic!

Are you gonna go grunge this Autumn?

Leather Shorts H&M | Tights Primark | Flatform Brogues River Island
Pearl Necklace & Bracelet Vintage |Rings Topman and New Look

I thought that I should show you this amazing ‘Audrey’ jacket, which I bought recently from The Vintage Set! Dogtooth is everywhere at the moment – just pop into your local Primark, Forever 21  and New Look – and you can see that they’re swarming with this Coco Chanel-inspired print! I have also been eyeing this jacket up for a while now, and when the lovely Charlotte from The Vintage Set gave me a Blogger’s discount code, I just HAD to get my hands on it! It’s so chic and comfy – and it can be worn causally with my River Island flatforms (they were £8 – bargain!), or with my black Chelsea boots for work!

If you’re a vintage lover, I suggest you check out The Vintage Set for one-of-a-kind pieces! It’s cheap and cheerful too!

It has been yet another busy week in the fashion cupboard, with more returns, calling PRs and all of us attending photoshoots. I attended the High Street Hottest shoot on Wednesday, and I have to say that I really enjoyed it! It was such a nice relaxing day away from the office (or should I say cupboard?), and all I had to do was steam the clothes and dress the model. It was an insightful day on how photoshoots work, and I was so happy that I had the opportunity to be a part of it! I was talking to the person who runs the studio we shot the photoshoot in, and it made me think that after university next year I want to spend the summer living and working aboard – with France, Italy and Spain being potential places – now all I need to do is save up and work!

Next year’s summer plans aside, this four day weekend is going to consist of catching up on sleep and celebrating Ali’s birthday on Tuesday, which should be fun – I think a trip to Nandos and the cinema is on the cards! I hope you all have a great weekend wherever you are, and look out for my week in photos post tomorrow!

Dear Diary;

Where has this week gone? It seemed like just yesterday when I was on the train with Ali ~moving~ down south, and now I have just completed my first week at my internship. Here are this week’s outfits for you all to ‘look’ at. (Geddit?)

From Top to Bottom: Top – TOPSHOP, Body Chain – MISS SELFRIDGE, Leather Shorts:  H&M, Tights – REPUBLIC (Staff Discount) & Black Boots – PEACOCKS.

o2

From Top to Bottom: Grey Cardigan – H&M, Black & White Stripe Shirt – £10 SALE STORE, Leggings – REPUBLIC (Staff Discount) Studded Slipper Shoes – REPUBLIC (Staff Discount).

From Top to Bottom: Crop leather jacket – H&M KIDS, Top – ZARA, High Waisted Shorts (underneath top) – RIVER ISLAND, Tights – REPUBLIC (Staff Discount) & Metallic Silver Boatman Shoes – C/O SPERRY.

From Top to Bottom: Top – URBAN OUTFITTERS, High Waisted Jeans – REPUBLIC (Staff Discount), Tape Measure Ring (not pictured) – TOPMAN & Floral Pumps – C/O KEDS.

My first week at Look has been amazing so far! I have met some lovely people (my fellow interns), and I have enjoyed the tasks we have had to do. That’s not to say that it has been perfect! You feel a sense of achievement when most of the clothes in your cupboard have gone, but feel a bit down when you come back from lunch only to find that it’s full again, but that’s fashion for you.

Despite it being an awesome week, it hasn’t half been stressful! Spending the past week being a fellow southerner/London commuter has seen me struggle to get to grips with London’s transport system. Some of my early mornings and late nights back (I got back at 10pm on Thursday after all trains to Ipswich were cancelled – cue going on the slowest train ever to Cambridge, arriving there and having to run from one end of the station to the other in order to catch a train to Ipswich), has made me sooo tired!  But it’s safe to say that this week hasn’t put me off so far from my ~dream~ to be a fashion journalist, and at least I have this weekend to relax and catch up on my sleep!

Today I am going shopping with Ali’s mum for his and his brother’s birthday presents, and then I am going to watch the final League One playoff – c’mon Huddersfield! Look out for my ‘week in photos’ post tomorrow!

The Voice. The Attitude. The Style. Who springs to mind when you think of these three words? Rihanna maybe? Or how about Pixie Lott? For me, it’s Jessie J.

There is no doubt that Jessie J is the epitome of cool in all of these departments. With her statement make-up – Union Jack lips anyone? And of course her gutsy attitude – she doesn’t take any crap from her fellow artists on BBC One’s The Voice.  It comes to no surprise that Ms J is an icon for young girls and women everywhere.

(Image sourced from here, here & here)

And now, you can steal the three-time Brit nominee’s looks-for-less. From her iconic see-through red dress at the 2012 Brit Awards, to the simple-but-edgy look below, you don’t need a designer ‘price tag’ to steal Jessie J’s style.

Here is what Jessie J wore on the left-hand side of the image, and what I found similar on the right-hand side:

1. Dip Dye, £80, Bleach London – Dip dye hair is big this season with celebrities such as Kate Bosworth, Stephanie Pratt and Caroline Flack, as well as amazing fashion bloggers LLYMLRS and Olivia Purvis donning this two-toned look.  If you want a top-notch dip dye do, then head to Bleach London where you can achieve this look for £80. Don’t have a healthy bank balance? Don’t worry, you can grab some hair dye and DIY in the comfort of your own home.

2. Clean PU Biker Jacket, £55, Topshop – Everyone needs a biker jacket to toughen up their wardrobe, and what better season to own one, with the likes of Balmain and Maison Martin Margiela including this jacket in their Spring/Summer collections. Biker jackets are a good investment and are a perfect addition to any pastel/print outfit! If you haven’t got one already, I suggest you invest in one now.

3. EXACT MATCH Long Clothing Drippy Print, £35, Topman – Who knew that Jessie J was a Topman shopper? This drippy black and white print t-shirt is perfect for the day (just look at Ms J’s ensemble), and it can also be transformed for a night out with the girls – just add these Missguided high waisted leather shorts, Barry M Lip Paint in Vibrant Pink and Urban Outfitters lace crochet boots.

4. Moto Stripe Supersoft Leigh Jeans, £40, Topshop – Stripy prints are in – anyone noticing the people of Britain donning referee gear in their everyday style? Fear not though, you don’t need to go overboard, just take inspiration from LLYMLRS. A simple striped jacket (or jeans in this case); will not only make your outfit ‘pop’, it will also make you look sophisticated and on-trend too. Here, Jessie J proves that you don’t have to do it like a dude to rock black and white (or in this case white and blue) stripes.

5. AMELIE Sixties Ankle Boot with Button Detail, £35, ASOS – Jessie J’s white boots prove that you don’t need ‘traditional’ black boots to achieve the ‘rocker’ look.  At £35 they are fairly expensive but for the cost-per-wear (you can pretty much wear them with anything – except at festivals) they are a good investment buy. All you need now is some Violent Lip tattoos and you will be a Jessie J in no time.

Do you like Jessie J’s style?

This short fashion feature is all about my ring collection!

From L-R: Tape Measure [Topman], Scrabble Initial [EBay], Deer [Primark], Armour [Primark], Cross [Urban Outfitters], Moustache [Topshop], LOVE [River Island] & Heart [Greggs – Free].

Most of you probably know by now that I LOVE gold jewellery, hence why most of these rings are in that luxurious colour. My favourites have to be the tape measure, LOVE and Scrabble rings because they are so versatile, and I wear them with most of my outfits. You’re probably wondering why the tape measure ring is from Topman – they have in my opinion, better and more ‘unique’ jewellery than Topshop! So if you’re looking for something different, head there! My heart ring was given to me for free from Greggs on Valentine’s Day last year; it’s more of a novelty ring than an ‘everyday’ one like the others. As you can see it’s not really a ‘collection’, so hopefully when the next student loan comes in, I can splash out on some more rings!

So that’s my ring collection! What rings do you have? Is your collection small like mine or is your jewellery box oozing with rings?
