fifty

Going on holiday soon? Well, whilst you have your Fifty Shades of Grey packed in your handbag, let’s not forget summer’s must-have essential – a pair of shades to protect those peeps of yours! And who needs one pair, when The Live Scene has fifty of them at your disposal?

Even though we only have one month of summer left (boo!), we still need a pair of sunglasses to see us through the remainder of August (get what I did there?) Here, I have found a range of shades – from designer to high street, from £1 to £200 – there is a pair to suit everyone’s needs!

My favourites have to be the two pairs of Karen Walker shades, as well as the classic Chanel-inspired half tint sunglasses, as seen on the likes of style icons Mary-Kate Olsen and Nicole Richie. You can get these designer dupes from eBay for only $9.99!

Sunglasses are not only a summer fashion essential, but they also protect your eyes from the harmful UV rays from the sun. These blue Arnette Agent sunglasses are perfect if you want to have a cool down by the pool, whilst at the same time protecting your peepers! Whilst some shades may look fun – who can forget Paris Hilton’s and Kanye West’s trademark ‘raver’ sunglasses – you have got to remember that unless you want crow’s feet or eye damage – and trust me, who wants that? You’ve got to care for those beautiful eyes of yours! And with these fifty shades at your disposal, you can look good and feel fine at the same time!

Today’s Wednesday Wishlist is all about the NewGen20 tees which launched at Topshop last Friday.

The tees were designed by twenty British designers including Christopher Kane, Meadham Kirchhoff and Jonathan Saunders to celebrate Topshop’s ten year collaboration with new emerging talent. I chose Gareth Pugh’s black and white graphic tee and I decided to create an outfit based around this top.

From L-R: 1. ASOS Black Metal Round Sunglasses, 2. ASOS Pyramid Metal Tip Clutch, 3. Topshop Gareth Pugh Graphic Print Tee, 4. Space NK Oh No She Didn’t Opaque Blue Lipstick, 5. Jeffrey Campbell ‘Lita Mac’ Bootie & 6. PETITE Exclusive Contrast Panel Skinny Trousers

1. Black Metal Round Sunglasses, £15, ASOS – These sunglasses are so kooky and unique! For £15 they are perfect for the summer, and will add a touch of the ‘60s to the look! Take inspiration from Marina Diamandis from Marina and The Diamonds, Mary-Kate Olsen and Taylor Momsen.

2. Pyramid Metal Tip Clutch, £12, ASOS – Pastel colours are HUGE this Spring/Summer with designers such as Louis Vuitton, Versus and Chanel all including duck egg blues in their S/S12 collections. This ASOS clutch injects a touch of colour into the outfit which mainly focuses on the monochrome palette.

3. Gareth Pugh Graphic Print Tee, £30, Topshop – I chose Gareth Pugh’s tee because I love his aesthetic of monochrome sculptural pieces, whether that would be this one featured here or his classic S/S 2007 patchwork square print. This tee is perfect for wearing to a casual lunch with the boyf, or it can be glammed up with some River Island faux leather leggings for a night out on the town. Celebrities are also a fan of the black and white graphic print tee. Steal inspiration from Audrina Patridge, Rihanna and 90210 star Jessica Stroup who all styled their graphic tee differently according to their own personal style.

4. Oh No She Didn’t Opaque Blue Lipstick, £7.50, Space NK ‘Blue lipstick? This blogger has gone crazy!’ I hear you say. Well, bright coloured lips have taken the Spring/Summer 2012 catwalks by storm with Mary Katrantzou, Richard Chai and Meadham Kirchhoff’s models all sporting a statement coloured lip. This blue lipstick is perfect for those who dare to be different in the style stakes.

5. Jeffrey Campbell ‘Lita Mac’ Bootie, £114, Nordstrom – It’s safe to assume that most girls on the planet would LOVE to own a pair of Jeffrey Campbell’s! And for me, these lace booties are no exception! Lace is another trend which is set to be big this Spring with designers such as Valentino, Miu Miu and Elie Saab all including this intricate fabric into their designs. And for £114 they may be pricey, but they are a good investment piece and they will mix up my monochrome look a bit too!

6. PETITE Exclusive Contrast Panel Skinny Trousers, £32, ASOS – And finally panelled trousers have also taken to the Spring/Summer catwalks with Balmain and Isabel Marant featuring these pants in their collections. So it comes to no surprise that I had to include this ASOS version into my Wednesday Wishlist. These panelled pants will liven up the look and will clash perfectly with the Gareth Pugh graphic tee.

That’s my wishlist for this week! What’s on your Wednesday Wishlist?

What words instantly come into your mind when you hear ‘Mary-Kate Olsen’? Twin? Actress? Fashion Designer? Style icon? Yep, that’s right, style icon.

The younger Olsen twin has been in the public spotlight for most of her life. It is not only her ability to act which puts her in the pages of Vogue Magazine, it’s her style. And that’s why this week’s Steal Her Style feature is dedicated to achieving Miss Olsen’s eccentric but simplistic look-for-less!

Think lively prints, basic colours and tons of accessorising and you’ve got Miss Olsen’s style to a tee.  So to help you guys get some inspiration, or maybe even a head start in the trend department, I have chosen to steal what Mary-Kate wore to The Art of Elysium Bright Lights event back in April, 2010. Now all you need are those beachy ‘just got out of bed’ locks!

Here is what Mary-Kate wore on the left-hand side of the image, and what I found similar on the right-hand side:
(Mary-Kate image is sourced from here)

Leopard Faux Fur Coat, £50, Miss Selfridge – Despite the fact that the Spring/Summer 2012 season is just around the corner, there is still no excuse to not indulge in a timeless piece such as the faux fur coat! Fur coats (real or not) were big on the Autumn/Winter catwalks of  Topshop Unique, Donna Karan and Giles. And they are perfect for those who are still suffering from those winter blues!

Structured Skater Dress, £46, Topshop – Skater dresses were featured in the Spring/Summer 2012 collections of British-born designer; Cushnie et Ochs, as well as London-based twins Felder Felder’s. However, if you can’t afford to splash out on this huge 2012 trend, then don’t worry! There are a number of structured skater dresses out there on the high street, from Republic’s ruby red number to River Island’s luscious leopard print dress – you are spoiled for choice!

Black Slim Tie, £8, Topman – A Mary-Kate Olsen outfit wouldn’t be complete without including a whole hoard of sporting accessories! This Topman tie will add a masculine edge to your outfit. Want to get more use out of your new tie? Then look to Ralph Lauren and Jason Wu for S/S 2012 inspiration.

Colour Mesh Bangle Pack, £12.50, Topshop – These cute coloured bangles from Topshop will complement the tie perfectly, as well as adding a ‘bohemian’ feel to the look. Orange tones were huge in the collections of Narciso Rodriguez, Michael Kors and Hermes. So why wait now? Invest in one of the hottest seasonal colours, and you’ll be sizzling your way through spring and summer!

Metal Ridged Ring, £6.50, Topshop – Like Mary-Kate, I love my rings! So I picked a few which matched her style, and a few which I liked too! This metal edge ring is perfect for adding a touch of masculinity to the outfit, along with the Topman tie.

Large Round Turquoise Ring, £28, Urban Outfitters – Most of Mary-Kate’s rings have turquoise stones infused in them, and what better ring to achieve MK’s look-for-less than this Urban Outfitter’s version?  It may be a bit on the pricey side, but for seasonal value, it ticks all the right trend boxes. Take inspiration from Marc Jacobs and Chanel, if you want to add more of this underwater colour into your wardrobes!

Made Brass Shikong’o Ring, £25, ASOS – This may be a small brass ring, but good things come in small packages – and this one doesn’t differ! This cute piece of jewellery can be incorporated into any look, and in the long term, will be a good investment in terms of cost-per-wear.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Clutch, £22.50, Accessorize – This left-handed Olsen twin loves her kooky accessories, and nothing fits the bill better than this amazing Accessorize star clutch! It’s currently in the sale, so bag yours (see what I did there?), while you can!

Miso Gold Zip Boots, £34.99, Republic – Nothing beats a nice pair of shoe boots to stride in style! I have these beautiful babies, and I must say, they go with any outfit, and they make lengthen your legs perfectly!

There you go! Look out for another Steal Her Style feature in the near future! But for now, do you like this Olsen twin’s style? Or do you prefer her older sister Ashley’s?

Here is a little feature on the Town Hall catwalk show I attended, as part of fashion event; Style Birmingham last week. Click on the links if you want to read Style Birmingham part one and part two!

The Town Hall fashion show was in so many ways very different to the Bullring show. For example in this spectacular show, the models showcased their acting and interpretative dancing skills, which was very surprising for visitors!

They also set the scene for all nine collections very well – I was particularly impressed with the ‘Shades of Autumn’ scene, where the models danced whilst striking some very strong poses at the same time!

I loved the ‘New Native’ scene, particularly because of the folky/tribal prints and the fact that you can incorporate this trend into your look so easily. If you’re a Topshop girl, make sure you bag this beaded collar necklace, chiffon playsuit or these über cool tribal earrings to spice up your wardrobe! Or if you want to be a fierce warrior but you’re on a budget, try New Look’s fringe t-shirt for £14.99 (there is currently 20% discount for students both online and instore!) or this quirky Aztec print hat to achieve the ‘New Native’ look!

The ‘Shades of Autumn’ scene basically summed up the staple colours you need in your wardrobe for Autumn/Winter 2011. Think neutrals such as cream (as seen on the model below) and brown, or if you want your staple piece to ‘pop’, include an orange or green palette into your closet. Accessorise with faux fur Cossacks such as this one from New Look, for a cheap £8.99 to complete your outfit.

I loved, loved, loved this scene! ‘Future Avatars’ was all about metallics, from short sequin dresses, to sparkly jumpers clashed with distressed jeans (as seen in the image below), to even sequin hoodies!  By adding just one metallic piece to your outfit, you will instantly be on trend! Republic, Urban Outfitters and Jaeger all have knitted jumpers which you must have this Autumn/Winter! If you don’t fancy metallic clothing, try some accessories – I especially love the headpiece that the model below is wearing!). Head to H&M for this funky metal chain necklace or try River Island for some glamorous metallic bags. One bag which caught my eye was this silver fringed one for a whopping £150! If you’re like me and live on a budget, try this grey studded purse for only £17.

When I saw that ‘Vintage Glamour’ would grace down the Birmingham catwalk, I didn’t really know what I would make of it. I mean vintage does play an important part in fashion and in today’s world; there are many more ‘vintage’ stores than there were in the last 10 years or so. So how can something which is so easily accessible (just by looking in your mum’s wardrobe) be a trend?

Well, despite my initial questions, I believe that ‘Vintage Glamour’ did justice for the vintage world. The looks were reminiscent of 1920s to 1940s glamour, which I think is what the scene was all about. Take inspiration from intricate dresses worn on celebrities such as Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively and style icon Mary-Kate Olsen. The colour palette for this trend was mainly taupe, white, black, grey and gold – some of the colours I’m sure will be in every girl’s wardrobe!

The final scene was ‘Dark Side’ and the outfits were basically all black. Think the Addams family but with more ‘style’. Despite the one block colour, the models pulled off these looks perfectly without going gothic! Try black zip dresses such as this one from Republic, or a pussy bow blouse from River Island, as well as Boohoo’s PU leather shorts. Anything stylishly black goes and I guess the black coloured-clothing world really is your oyster for this trend!

That’s it for Style Birmingham; hopefully I covered everything you wanted to know! Look out for future fashion event posts!
