As you may have seen from my previous post, I went to Style Birmingham this weekend. Here is a feature about the event, as well as a review of one of the two fashion shows I attended and the latest looks Retail Birmingham have predicted for Autumn/Winter 2011!

Style Birmingham was a three-day event which ran from the 23rd September to 25th September. Plenty of shoppers had the opportunity to bag exclusive instore offers and goodie bags, as well as having the chance to see two amazing fashion shows at the famous Birmingham Bullring, as well as the Town Hall for only £10.

Not only that but those who bought a Gold VIP ticket were granted a champagne reception in the VIP Lounge as well as bagging a meet and greet with the gorgeous George Lamb! Lucky so and so’s!

The event kicked off at 10am with scores of eager beavers waiting at The Mailbox to receive an exclusive shopper bag designed by Birmingham-born designer, Osman Yousefzada. This lovely illustrated bag was wrapped with a cute pink ribbon around it.

After everyone had collected their designer bags, they had the whole weekend to enter luxurious competitions such as the chance to win an Alexander McQueen scarf, as well as the opportunity to watch a couple of catwalk shows.

Bullring Fashion Show: Redefinition
The first fashion show I attended was ‘Redefinition’ in the Bullring. It was an half an hour catwalk show which showcased some amazingly-styled high street clothes. The show only had a limited number of seats available for Gold VIP ticket holders, however me and Ali  (who bought standard tickets) managed to bag ourselves a seat and a couple of goodie bags.

These goodie bags consisted of mostly men’s perfume samples (which was unfortunate for me but good for Ali), and a couple of beauty samples.

The show itself featured eight different ‘scenes’ from ‘Dark Romance’ to ‘Feathers and Fur’, here are a few of the scenes in detail.

‘Dark Romance’ was the first scene, and was one of my favourite ‘scenes’ of the day!
darkromance I love the styling of this particular picture I took, which reminds me of my style. I love the classic clashing of monochrome colours, as well as the detail that the gold chain belt brings to the outfit. As you can see on the image, all of the clothes are more or less an affordable price from top high street stores, so you don’t have to break the bank to achieve a simple, but seductive on-trend look.

‘The Mod Squad’ channelled the 60s vibe with the classic A-line skirt, graphic printed dresses and neck-tie blouses, as well as adding bright colour-blocking into the mix.

I especially loved this bold look above and I think that this outfit, out of all the looks in this scene, was the best one to embody the current 60s trend! As much as I love this look, I don’t think I’ll be buying the clothes anytime soon, the choice of colours is not really ‘me’. However, I will be definitely hitting Claire’s and grabbing those sunnies!

Scene three was ‘Heritage’, and showcased mostly autumnal colours such as brown, orange and tan, as well as autumn’s must have: the tweed jacket. Here is a video of the ‘Heritage’ scene (ignore my hand shaking about, and the heads of those in front!) Enjoy!

‘Forties Flair’ is another Autumn/Winter’ trend which graced the Bullring catwalk. Think faux fur stoles, plenty of grey hues and polka dot designs!

As you can see, I have included some of the men’s looks too, for all you male readers out there! Guys, take inspiration from 1940’s music icons such as American clarinettist Artie Shaw and other jazz artists.

Another one of my favourite scenes was ‘Mannish’. I love the masculine look, which has been seen on hot celebrities such as Ellie Goulding and Fearne Cotton. So I couldn’t resist sharing this picture that I took of this model donning an all-black mannish outfit.

The leather coat is a bit too pricey and long for a shorty like me, but I do love how incorporating a classic black long coat with a masculine touch of leather can instantly make you bang on-trend!

Deliciously-styled ‘Decadence’, was the penultimate scene of the show. Think teal and green hued dresses, blazers and for men, hoodies!
This look was all about elegance, with an attention to blue and green colours and gold accessorising. I especially love the gold clutch on image two! This trend for men is pretty simple to achieve, try mixing the above colours with suit jackets and denim jeans for a casual on-trend look.  Girls, stick to one colour and accessorize with gold jewellery, bags and shoes to achieve the ‘Decadence’ trend.

And finally, ‘Feathers and Fur’ was the last scene to grace the runway. This trend is all about clashing textures (feathers and fur), such as sporting a faux fur coat from Republic with a Topshop feather Alice band, or if you want to keep it simple, stick to accessories such as this brown £16 faux fur headband from Miss Selfridge and an Urban Outfitters feather necklace for only £20.

I love this picture because of the clashing textures, which breaks all of the typical ‘fashion rules’! Many people have believed for years that you are not meant to mix prints, textures or colours, but for the past two or so seasons, it seems that today’s generation of designers are forming a rebellion and creating a new direction for fashion to grow.

It seemed fitting that this last trend ended the fashion show as all of these trends do redefine fashion. This is after all, the show’s title.

And just when you think you had the fashion rulebook sussed…

Look out for part 3 of Style Birmingham in the near future  Trust me; you wouldn’t want to miss it!

(All pictures were taken by me)

Here is The Live Scene’s new weekly feature, From Catwalk to High Street. Have you ever seen a beautiful outfit designed by Marc Jacobs, Balmain or John Galliano and wanted to re-create that look for less? Then look no further as The Live Scene is on hand to find similar items for the snip of the designer’s price.

Each week I shall focus on one designer’s collection from the Autumn/Winter 2011 fashion shows, and re-create their look for less. You don’t need to pay £2000 for the actual garment, when you can get similar clothing at high street prices!

#1 JONATHAN SAUNDERS
I love
Jonathan Saunders; his colourful and flirty outfits are simply beautiful! For his Autumn/Winter 2011 collection, some of the trends Saunders focused on were colour-blocking – a Spring/Summer trend which is still big for the end of 2011, and menswear – yes I’m featuring outfits for you guys out there! Enjoy! Colour-blocking, which was seen on the catwalks of Anna Sui and Isabel Marant, is still set to be a massive trend for the Autumn/Winter 2011 season. The catwalk saw Saunders’ designs flaunt down the runway in an array of pop-art colours, from two-hue blue and green cardigans to mint green satin blouses teamed with maroon pencil skirts. There is no doubt that Saunders has stepped up this season from his pastel-filled and el noir Spring/Summer 2011 collection, and below, I have attempted to find similar high fashion pieces for high street prices.

Red Rib Back Tank, £10, River Island – Despite scouring the online high street stores, I couldn’t find a red blouse similar to the one above! However, I did find this cheap but simple red tank vest, which teamed with the bright blue jersey pencil skirt below, hits the nail on the colour-blocking trend’s head. The red tank tucks effortlessly into the pencil skirt, which goes to show, you don’t need to be an heiress to produce high fashion outfits at high street prices! Saunders would be proud!

Jersey Pencil Skirt, £25, Topshop – Pencil skirts are a hugely predicted Autumn/Winter 2011 trend, with the extravagant and silhouette skirt by Marc Jacobs to Louis Vuitton’s beyond sexy see-through mesh ensemble. So it comes to no surprise that Topshop has flagged this trend as one of its five key autumn/winter pieces. This jersey pencil skirt in cobalt blue shows off them beautiful curves of yours while ticking all the right trend boxes.

Black Jewelled Waist Belt, £22, Miss Selfridge – This black jewelled belt cinches your waist in and separates the bold red vest and pop-out blue skirt. The jewels add more glamour into the outfit, making the look wearable for not only the daytime, but for night time too.

SALE! Kingpin Black Leather Wedge Boot, £24, Office – Last but not least, is these killer black wedges from Office. These not only add a touch of ‘rock’ into the outfit (think Alexa Chung), but they also add height which elongates those hidden legs of yours!

Overall at £87, this outfit may not be the real ‘Jonathan Saunders’ deal, however it does show that you don’t need to be an A-List star or have won the lottery several times to own a designer-inspired outfit!

Unlike his previous Spring/Summer 2011 collection, Saunders included delicious male models sporting his new menswear collection. Similar to the colour-blocking trend for women above, Saunders concentrated on three-tone cardis (again incorporating the colour-block trend), as well as piecing together different prints. Of course, the looks were toned down by simple black shoes and plain navy, cream or black trousers. Below, despite my attempts, this is the best look I have created which is similar to Saunder’s creation.  Finding similar high fashion pieces on the high street is harder work than it looks!

SALE! TMD Khaki Sheer Cardigan, £30, Topman – This khaki sheer cardigan may be a million miles away from Saunder’s three-tone cardigan, however, with the mixed prints trend in mind, it works. The cardigan may have a utilitarian feel, but teamed with the red print knit, this outfit conquers two trends at once.

Pattern Shawl Neck, £40, Next – This fair-trade-like knit is only for the daring of all men. You’ve got to be eccentric but not afraid of die-hard preppy, G-Star/Bench critics to wear this baby with the Topman cardigan above! The two-layers will keep you lovely and warm into the winter months, and with the plain blue trousers and black espadrilles, they won’t look ‘over-the-top.

Blue Overdyed Cuffed Carrot Trousers, £38, Topman – Cuffed trousers are in fashion at the moment, and are a best seller in high street stores such as Republic and River Island. So I had to include these trendy trousers into this Jonathan Saunders-like outfit. These are plain and simple, and allow people to focus on the mixed print top half effortlessly.

Black Slip on Espadrilles, £19.99, River Island – Who doesn’t own a pair of espadrilles?? These black ones are the perfect piece of footwear to complete this outfit. The trousers and espadrilles are very similar to the catwalk Jonathan Saunders image above and for summer through to autumn, these babies can be worn for any occasion, to your heart’s/your man’s content.

At £128, this outfit is expensive for you males, however these products are bang on-trend, and even if you don’t want the whole outfit, I suggest you buy one of these pieces of clothing as they will see you through the summer, autumn and winter trends! That’s the first ‘From Catwalk to High Street’ finished! Hopefully this will be a regular feature like This Week’s Wishlist, and I hope you enjoyed reading it!

This week I have created three outfits from online savvy-store, ASOS. ASOS is the UK’S largest online-only fashion store and has been around for over 10 years, providing budding fashionistas with the latest trends priced from £5 to over £100.

These three looks are just snippets of what designers have predicted for the Autumn/Winter 2011 season. Think futuristic silhouettes, eccentric ladylike pieces and fabric clashes, just to name a few.  Enjoy.

Here they are from clock-wise round:

Outfit 1
ASOS Wiggle Mesh Body
, £30 – The number one Autumn/Winter 2011 trend which has graced the catwalks of Dolce & Gabbana, Felder Felder and Alexander McQueen is the fetish trend. I know what you’re thinking, ‘fetish??’ Yes, fetish. Despite the initial thought to fetish, the catwalks saw a more ‘demure’ fetish – so I’m not promoting handcuffs and whips before you ask! This body is oh-so-perfect for the ‘fetish’ look, and resembles this top by designer, Giles.  This is perfect for those who want to incorporate this trend into their wardrobe without needing to go over-the-top like sexy celebs; Rihanna and Britney Spears.

ASOS Premium Short with Leather Pockets, £50 – These lovely red shorts are perfect for achieving the ‘fetish’ look for Autumn/Winter 2011. The leather pockets add a sense of modesty to the trend with an added touch of contrasting colour-blocking with the dark red and black colour palette. These shorts are also a better substitution and are a more original choice than wearing black leather shorts, which with this look, are expected.

ASOS Style Vintage-Style Filigree Articulated Armour Ring, £10 – By adding a vintage gold armour ring to this outfit, it makes the outfit less ‘sexed-up’ and more modest-looking. I love gold rings, and I could not let this pretty vintage piece slip my eyes.

ASOS Passion Peep-Toe Court Shoe, £25 – With such a strong colour palette, adding any more colours to the mix would not mesh well. So these nude peep-toe shoes are perfect for not only elongating your legs (an excellent choice for shorties like me!) but it keeps any attention to the upper-half of the outfit which is where the trend is most frequent. This look goes to show you don’t need to wear hardly any clothes to feel ‘sexy’!

Outfit 2
Motel Ozlem Colour Block Dress
, £38 – Colour-blocking is still a big part of the Autumn/Winter 2011 season with designers such as Gucci, Haider Ackermann and Louis Vuitton having their own take on the trend. This colour block dress achieves this trend perfectly without going over-the-top – think a brighter version of this Prada dress at Milan Fashion week, without the clashing print.

ASOS Leather Cropped Blazer, £100 – A cropped leather blazer ‘toughens’ up this party look and clashes with this dress perfectly. At £100, it is definitely an investment piece which can be used for a whole load of different looks from toughening up pretty floral dresses, to achieving this season’s ‘fetish’ look. It is safe to say that this is most definitely money well spent.

Illamasqua Lipstick in Climax, £15.50 – Forget Mary Katranzou pastel pink lips and statement DSquared2 red lips, it’s all about 90s grunge/ 1970s-inspired lip shades! Not convinced? This beauty trend was at the forefront of Autumn/Winter 2011 fashion shows with Marc Jacobs and YSL leading the shade down the catwalk of Milan, for example. This lipstick will complement the leather blazer perfectly.

ASOS Weave Metal Tip Envelope Clutch, £30 – Woven accessories are a huge Spring/Summer 2011 trend at the moment with high-street stores such as Topshop, incorporating this material into their bags and hats. So I had to include this current trend into outfit two! This woven envelope clutch clashes with the leather blazer and colour block dress with ease, making the outfit more unique and original than if I had accessorized the dress differently.

ASOS Swatch Lace-up Block Heel  Shoe, £45 – This lace-up block heel shoe makes me think of Alexa Chung, a style icon who totally rocks the indie/vintage look! If you want to make like Alexa, then this shoe is definitely for you. Not only can it complete and complement this outfit effortlessly, these shoes can be dressed up with this dress, but can be dressed down with skinny jeans for the casual day look.

Outfit 3
ASOS Crop Trouser in Metallic Finish, £40 – Fashion forecasters have predicted the future – literally! The ‘futuristic’ look is another big trend which has hit the Autumn/Winter 2011 catwalks with a metallic palette of clothing from Calvin Klein to strong silhouette pieces as seen on Viktor & Rolf and Balmain models. So these silver metallic crop trousers had to be included in the third and final outfit in this week’s wishlist! The key to this look is simplistic pieces and strong colours which will balance each other rather than having loads of clashing prints.

ASOS Blue Cropped Jumper, £30 – A blue cropped jumper will look great with the silver trousers and shows that you don’t have to dress up too much with this futuristic trend, and that you can be casual too!

ASOS Statement Metal and Multi-Coloured Feather Necklace, £25 – A metal and multi-coloured necklace will add more subtle colour to this third outfit, again, without going ‘over-the-top’. Feathers are still on trend for the Spring/Summer 2011 season, so it would be rude not to include them into this look.  This statement necklace is the only necessary accessory you need to complete this outfit, adding any more accessories would just kill the look.

Barry M Lip Paint in Dolly Pink, £4.50 – This pretty pastel pink shade will contrast the blue jumper flawlessly, leaving your lips to in-fact, do the talking. With make-up such as this making an impact on this outfit, who needs loads of accessories?

ASOS Defend Canvas & Suede High Top Trainers, £30 – Whoever thought high top trainers were too ‘casual’ were wrong. These trainers are the finishing touch to this third look, which not only allows you to achieve the comfortable casual look, but you will look fashionable and on-trend at the same time.

That is another wishlist done for this week. Next week I will be scouring the Miss Selfridge website to create three on-trend looks. I bet your shaking with excitement

This week’s Wishlist will feature items from style-savvy store; River Island. Similar to my Topshop Wishlist, I have created three outfits which I would wear for night’s out/casual daytime.

These wishlists are also a perfect opportunity to control my urge to spend. Although I do try to think of outfits while I shop, having the chance to create outfits and post them here will allow me not to spontaneously spend my deteriorating student loan… win/win I say!

Here are the items from clock-wise round:

Outfit 1:
Green Leather Bow Jacket, £140 Despite the price, I love the jacket! When you first think of a green leather jacket you think of the typical ‘urgh’ bogey, disgusting green. Sorry to disappoint but this jacket is far from it! It’s a subtle shade of green which is unusual – and you should know by now that I like the ‘unusual’ and is a perfect match with my collar button dress. This is one to invest your money in ladies!

SALE ! Beige Collar Button through Dress, £unknown – Unfortunately this is now out-of-stock online, so the hyperlink would have taken you to an ‘out-of-stock’ page. But this dress is nice and plain which I like, plus it has the sought-after ‘Peter Pan’ collar which is a ‘must-have’ trend on this season’s catwalks. This dress will sit perfectly underneath my green leather jacket (as you can see in the picture). Let’s hope they have this baby in stock in my local River Island store!

Black Stone Ring, £10 – Another shame for you, this item is now out-of-stock! Cue sad face and tears welling up in my eyes! This ring would have gone perfectly with my ‘tough’ look. Hopefully I will come across this gem in the local RI shop!

Dark Red Lace up Ankle Boots, £35 – Dark red is one of my favourite colours, so I could not pass up the opportunity to include these cute ankle boots into my Wishlist this week. I like to mix and match my colours, and these would go very nicely with my subtle leather green jacket. These boots alongside the jacket will ‘toughen’ up the collar dress which again makes this outfit a ‘winner’ in my eyes. Now if only I had a money tree…

Outfit 2:
Purple Colour-Block Playsuit, £30 – Similar to last week’s Wishlist, I went for a piece in the colour-blocking trend and I could not let this playsuit slip past my eyes. This is a nice basic outfit for going out in, which is what I am basing outfit two on, and it will simply let the colours do the talking on the dance floor!

Silver Look Headphone Delicate Necklace, £6 – This beautiful delicate necklace is just up my street! The headphones are unusual, and depict my interest in music, as well as injecting more ‘fun’ into the outfit.

Silver Look Armour Ring, £7 – To say I usually go for gold jewellery, I instantly fell in love with this ring when I saw it online. This adds a bit of ‘bling’ to the outfit without making it look ‘trashy’.

Black Jelly Sandals, £50 – I love, love, love my plain black shoes! These black jelly sandals will be the finishing touch to my outfit, and will compliment my favourite small black bag which I have christened ‘the going out bag’.  Perfect!

Outfit 3:
SALE! Blue Print Swing Frill Vest, £7 – I couldn’t help but have a root through the sales – which is one reason why most of my Wishlist buys are out-of-stock! Nevertheless, this blue print top is perfect for daytime! This, teamed with the white crochet shorts below is perfect for looking fashionable while on a nice walk along the riverside.

SALE! White Crochet Shorts, £unknown – Oh no! These lovely pair of shorts are out-of-stock! Cue more tears! However, these shorts would have gone perfectly with the blue print top tucked in. Oh and the cute flats below! Hopefully they will be available in store!

Silver Look Armour Ring, £7 – This ring is not only functional for outfit two, but it would complement this outfit as well! With a look like this, adding minimalist jewellery is the better option than caking the outfit with bling, I think!

SALE! Light Pink Loafer Brogues, £20 – Yay! Finally found another sale item in stock! I think I shall definitely be buying these brogues for other outfits. Again, these will tee-up the outfit perfectly for the daytime and if I wanted to take the look into the night I shall be adding a black cropped-jacket and my black jelly heels from outfit two!

Et voila! This week’s wishlist is complete! Look out for next week’s wishlist where I shall be drooling over sought-after pieces available from the wonderful Urban Outfitters!

A new weekly supplement will take place at The Live Scene called ‘This Week’s Wishlist…”. This week I thought I’d start with one high-street shop which is one of my favourites; Topshop.

I scoured the Topshop website to find things which caught my eye and stumbled across these items. I then created these three ‘going out’ outfits which are my take on the latest fashion trends. Enjoy!

Here they are from clock-wise round:

Outfit 1:
Ecru Leather White Mesh Shirt, £34 – I love, love, love white shirts! I currently own a crisp white shirt from Topshop, which was priced at £45! Needless to say, I have been getting my money’s worth by wearing it as much as I can! When I saw this shirt with leather black stripes across the chest I instantly knew what I could wear it with! Definitely on my ‘must-buy’ list!

Black Leather Zip Side High Waisted Shorts, £48 – I been looking for some black leather shorts for ages, and luckily Topshop have some black high waisted ones to go with the white shirt above! I have always been in the ‘rocky’ sort of style, and this first outfit is so me! It’s also very Alexa Chung.

Sue Black Woven Lace up Shoe Boots, £85 – I’m not much of a shoe person, I just have my standard going out shoes and my standard day shoes – my shoe collection is dire compared to the rest of my friends! But I couldn’t help but add these boots to my Wishlist as they would complement the outfit perfectly. Plus the lattice effect on the boots will lengthen my very short legs!

Lipstick Studs by Danielle Scutt, £15 – I am definitely going to purchase these lovely earrings by Danielle Scutt! These lipstick studs are so eccentric and are just up my street! They will add a bit of colour to the monochrome look, and will complement the red lipstick I will be wearing.

Vintage Look Cocktail Ring, £12.50 – As you know from previous posts, I am currently coveting rings, especially vintage or unique looking ones! This one will complement this outfit perfectly and will make the look more ‘classic’. This ring will also feature in outfit two as well.

Outfit 2:
Bright Blue Two Colour Vest, £30 – Colour-blocking is scattered across front pages and spreads of nearly every fashion magazine. So it comes to no surprise that this trend features in ‘This week’s Wishlist…’ I love the colour blue, it’s one of my favourite colours and this colour-block vest which is bright blue on the front has a bright pink underlay; will look very nice for a night out.

Body Chain,(worn over the vest top) £16.50 – This will be purchased within the coming weeks as I simply love this gold body chain! Teamed up with the bright blue two colour vest, it will brighten the look up and take it away from the ‘simplistic’ look. This is minimalist jewellery at its best.

Pink Pleat Front Shorts, £32 – These pink pleat shorts will go perfectly with the bright blue two colour vest! I’m not usually a fan of pink; however these shorts make me feel all summery!

Sense Cut out Platforms, £70– To complete the outfit; I have picked these blue platforms which will, like outfit one, lengthen my short legs. Plus, these are quite unusual which I very much like!

Outfit 3:
Burgundy Gold Button Epaulette Panel Shirt, £36 – Outfit three is the epitome of the whole tribal/festival look – which I am a big fan of! Again, I love shirts and the colour burgundy, so I couldn’t pass up this opportunity to include this in my final outfit.

Grey Printed Jersey Tapered Trousers, £30 – These printed trousers will go perfectly with the burgundy top tucked into them. I would describe this outfit as quite casual compared to the rest of the ‘going out’ outfits because of the ‘laid-back’ look of the outfit as a whole. Plus print is in!

Skull Tassel Pendant, £14 – This pendant will ‘brighten’ the look up. I love skull accessories, and this necklace, over the top of the burgundy shirt will elevate the look from daytime to night-time.

Wizard Black Suede Wedges, £70 – These wedges will also take the look from daytime to night-time and will complement the look perfectly! Again, I like to show my feet off so I do have some skin on show – despite the top being see-through I will probably wear a plain black vest underneath. This look is perfect for those cold summer nights!

Plain Gold Armour Ring, £12.50 – I am in love with this ring! I am really into my ‘unusual’ rings at the moment and this is the perfect accessory to complete this outfit! Gold jewellery is a favourite of mine and the armour ring will add to the whole ‘tribal/festival’ feel I am going for.

So there you go! Here is my first Wishlist on high-regarded store, Topshop. Next week I will pick my favourite items from one of my all-time favourite stores; River Island.
